In pondering the contrast between modern ministry methodologies and the actual Word of God:

    1. Would God have preserved Sodom, if only they had a “be a better you” book?

    2. Was Nineveh spared, because Jonah preached, “God loves you and has a wonderful plan for your life?”

    3. Were the early churches in shambles, at Paul’s death, because he was not purpose-driven?

    4. Was God threatening the churches of Asia Minor, because their leadership principles were lacking?

Asinine! The depth of meaning from each of the above reveals weightier matters nearly lost in preaching today. The lessons contain not the accomplishments made by the schemes of man, but by the Hand of the Lord.

“…’Not by might nor by power, but by my Spirit’, says the LORD Almighty.” Zec 4:6

1. God knew Sodom as a city of brazen wickedness (Gen 13:13). “The people were guilty of the most notorious crimes and addicted to the most scandalous and unnatural lusts” (John Gill). Their sin was most glaring and grievous before the Lord God (Gen 18:20). No matter the greatness of the city’s sin, God was still willing to spare it with as little as 10 righteous God-fearing citizens. The city failed to produce even 10. God did not grant them principles to better their life or a means to improve their nature. Though he spared Lot’s family, God simply destroyed the city with no message, no hope, and no warning.

Lost Message – God abhors sin and will destroy, without mercy, all that violate their conscience by ardently persisting in it (Rom 1:16-32). In the same way, the earth, and all creation, will be one day violently destroyed with fire and therefore by, through, and because of the Grace of God Christians should love holy and godly in this present evil age (2 Pet 3:10-11, Titus 2:11-12).

2. God told Jonah go to Nineveh and “cry against the city” for “their wickedness has come up before me” (Jon 1:2). The city was a violent place. Jonah’s message, “Because of your great wickedness, you have 40 days until your great city will be overthrown” (Jon 3:4). Though His mercy is clearly seen, there was no message of His love. God did not comfort or encourage the Ninevites nor did He articulate their worth, but His anger. They were struck by the blunt edge of a solemn admonition. The God of all creation was personally displeased (Jon 3:9). They repented and turned to God in humility. God spared the city from His judgment by granting them a warning against their great sin, which they heeded (Jon 3:10).

Lost Message – God will speak strong words of correction and rebuke when he is displeased (Heb 12:5-6). These reprimands are intended to bring repentance, a turning or returning to Him (2 Cor 7:10-11, 2 Tim 3:16) and correction for our souls (Prov 3:11, Heb 12:9). God rebukes those He loves (Rev 3:19).

3. Paul preached an offensive (Gal 5:11) and illogical message (1 Cor 1:18) that stirred disdain from his culture and violent anger from the religious community (Acts 13:50). God established his purpose with the revelation he received from no man (Gal 1:11-16). In addition, the fledgling church struggled to survive as Christians were attacked with gruesome Roman persecution. That which remained, in times of peace, was picked over by false ministers (2 Cor 11:13) who crept in to subvert the Truth (2 Pet 2:1).

Lost Message – All who live Godly will suffer persecution (2 Tim 3:12). There is no escaping the true costly selfless Biblical Christianity seen in the lives of Stephen, Peter, James, Paul and all others “who loved not their lives unto death” (John 12:25, Rev 12:11).

4. The churches of Asia Minor were strongly chastised by the Lord for forsaking their first love (Rev 2:4-5), possessing a lax attitude that tolerated preaching that led His people into sexual sin and idolatry (Rev 2:14 & 20) and maintaining religious practice, but remaining indifferent to it (Rev 3:15-16).

Lost Message – The Lord Jesus was neither impressed nor concerned with the organizational savvy of church leadership. He was not aroused to remove the source of spiritual light from their midst (Rev 2:5), because of a lack of influence. He was sovereignly disturbed by the passivity; which allowed the teaching that led His people into whoredom with the world (Rev 2:14, 15 & 20). He becomes fiercely displeased with the general unfaithfulness of His bride and will repay all according to their deeds (Rev 2:23).

God is a jealous God (2 Cor 11:2) for we are his purchased possession (Eph 1:14) and therefore tempting the Lord God ultimately brings strong retribution (1 Cor 10:9).

The absence of these pivotal and basic doctrinal messages has left Christ’s church impotent against the devastation of sin and the spirit of the world. The incessant and unbalanced heralding of God’s love has created a society of rebels with no fear of God. The profuse delivery of self-centered, man-centered, non-challenging, flesh-friendly, superficial and baseless lectures lay partially to blame for the masses of religious consumers possessing “itchy-ears” (2 Tim 4:3).

In coping with the loss of Divine power, the carnal and apostate have developed clever devices to overcome the lack of Christian influence in the post-modern world. While one may argue, “Observe our numbers, see our leadership and judge our success”, the proper defense should rather be, “Observe our devotion, see our passion and judge our fruit.”

Those who will not heed these warnings will grow weary of this Cry For Repentance, but there is only one answer for the gross error of this Laodicean age:

if my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then will I hear from heaven and will forgive their sin and will heal their land.” 2 Chron 7:14

Demonic Entertainment

Evil spirits were not provided for your cinematic entertainment. They are fallen creatures seeking to lure your soul in fatal error. What a gross contradiction it is then, when church members disregard warnings in Scripture, in order to receive enjoyment from that, which despises their supposed Savior.

Another Whitefield!

With the statement of “Oh, for another Whitefield!” Jesse Morrell an open-air preacher himself responded:

“First, let a man so hunger and thirst after righteousness, that he’d be willing to almost fast and pray himself to death, as Whitefield did.

Then, let a man be willing to be thought of as a fool by his own household, and a legalist by his own peers, as Whitefield was.

Then, let a man be willing to preach the true gospel, so clear and so forcefully, that the religious world will not be able to tolerate him, but will force him to preach in the streets instead of the Churches, as Whitefield was.

Then let a man be willing to endure spittings, stonings, beatings, and mobs, all with the love of Christ burning in his heart, as Whitefield did.

Then, if a man is willing to preach 40 hours a week, until he often vomits blood, being up early praying, and up late traveling, ONLY THEN, will we have another Whitefield.”

Leonard Ravenhill once pleaded: “God of Whitefield, give us today men like Whitefield who can stand as giants in the pulpit, men with burdened hearts, burning lips, and brimming eyes. And, Lord, please do it soon!” If we do not have another Whitefield in America or England it is over!

False prophets, false priests, peddling of the word of God, all of these are common place and only the trumpet call of prophetic magnitude of a Whitefield will have any avail!

Many more things could be written of this man of God but we will end with the words of George Whitefield before a large open-air congregation: “At the day of Judgment we shall all meet again!”

Troublemakers in the Church

We need more troublemakers in the church! I pray that every member of the body of Christ would become a troublemaker! We need an army of troublemakers who have become so full of the Holy Ghost they will stir up and trouble New York City and every other city in the world; trouble their wicked institutions – challenge the established dead churches – trouble the leaders, the mayors, the city councils, the community leadership! In other words, we need Holy Ghost troublemakers moving in the Spirit, proclaiming the kingship of Christ so effectively that whole cities are stirred.

Paul upset the status quo. He had challenged the devil who had been having his way for years. The slave-owners of the delivered woman then dragged Paul and Silas into the marketplace to stand trial before the city magistrates. The charge was, “…These men…do exceedingly trouble our city” (Acts 16:20). “And the multitude rose up together against them: and the magistrates rent off their clothes, and commanded to beat them. And when they had laid many stripes upon them, they cast them into prison, and made their feet fast in the stocks.” (Acts 16:22-24). It looked as though Satan had won. The new converts must have been stunned!

Many churches today are full of silent, gentlemanly diplomats, not wanting to make waves! Nobody wants trouble! So the devil’s kingdom goes unchallenged. We have more than enough smiling, mousy Christians! I heard the raging of a man who said to me, “Let’s make a bet – any amount of money! You people in the church can’t stop anything! You’ll get a little publicity, but nothing ever changes. You can’t shut anything down! You’re powerless in this league!”

Early Church Ministers vs Modern Church Ministers

In the early church, the ministers said, “It would not be right for us to neglect the ministry of the word of God in order to wait on tables.”

In the modern church, ministers convey, “It would not be right for us to neglect strategizing, ‘dialog’ing, ‘outreach’ing, visioneering, ‘leadership’ing, ‘purposeful’ing, ‘relevant’ing, ‘missional’ing, ‘relational’ing and starbucking in order to wait on God.”

The Remnant Will Cry Out

One day, a steadily increasing mass of people, humbly called ‘the remnant’, because of the shared disgust of this modern-day, coffehouse, mickey mouse churchianical consumerism so shamelessly flaunted, will shout in unity to God for a fresh outpouring and for Christ and His cross to be so lifted up that all will see Him in His Power and Glory as He truly is!

God is not a pansy…

God is not a pansy and His love is not the endearment of a needy co-dependent. We need Him, He did not need us. He owes us nothing, we owe Him everything. His Word is true, His judgment swift and final. Do not be deceived by the portrayal of this ‘ghandi’ Jesus many preach today. (Matt 10:32-40) He is Lord of all and one day soon will be recognized as such with bended knee. And when any man does service unto the Lord, it is not to make God indebted to him, as if to make God his equal. Rather, it is but a feeble attempt to honor Him as He eternally deserves.

Love vs Tolerance

There is a great cry throughout the world today pushing tolerance and much of it comes from a rising spirit of godlessness in the nations. The most intolerant nations and national leaders are preaching tolerance, calling for the break down of all barriers of religion and differences.

But this is the position of the people of God – the Bible is the most intolerant book in all the world and the most intolerant book in all the world and the most intolerant teacher that ever addressed Himself to an audience was the Lord Jesus Christ Himself.

Now Jesus Christ demonstrated the vast difference between being charitable and being tolerant. Christ was so charitable that in His great heart, He was willing to weep over sinners; He took in all the people of the world and was willing to die for those who hated Him.

But even with that kind of love and charity, Jesus was so intolerant that He taught, “If you are not on my side, then you are against me; if you do not believe that I am He, you will die in your sins.” He did not leave any middle ground to accommodate the neutral folks who preach tolerance. Christ leaves no middle ground, no place in between.

Tolerance easily becomes a matter of cowardice if spiritual principles are involved and if the Bible is ignored. Suppose we take the position of tolerance and compromise on the issue of salvation. “Everyone come to Christ and be saved, if you want to; but if you do not want to be saved, maybe there is some other way that we can find for you. We want you to believe in the Lord Jesus Christ if you will, but if you do not want to, then we will try to find a possibility that God will have some other way for you.”

So tolerance is a spreading disease that is eating away at the absolutes of divine revelation and the unchanging truths of the Bible. But tolerance must not be tolerated by the true Christian, even when it costs them misunderstanding or alienation from friends, family, and this world.

Golden-calf Christianity

“Any objection to the carryings on of our present golden-calf Christianity is met with the triumphant reply, “But we are winning them!” Winning them to what? To true discipleship? To cross-carrying? To self-denial? To separation from the world? To crucifixion of the flesh? To holy living? To nobility of character? To a despising of the world’s treasures? To love for God? To total committal to Christ?” A. W. Tozer

Compromised Preaching

Many ministers claim to preach the “uncompromised Word of God”…the problem is their preaching is compromised. “Even from your own number men will arise and distort the truth in order to draw away disciples after them.” (Acts 20:30)

A lukewarm person is content, happy, and fruitless…possessing just enough Jesus to get him to Heaven. This is a farce…Rev 3:16-17. “Don’t let anyone deceive you. Whoever does what God approves of has God’s approval as Christ has God’s approval” (God’s Word) I John 3:7.
